Support during Christmas

The Unbarred Project Newsletter
by Kirsty Cooper

Your first Christmas post-release can be daunting whether it is alone or with family. Although there is no magic way to ensure that the holidays will be easy there are a few steps which may make them easier.

Volunteering

This a great way to keep busy, have company and provide for your local community. There are many initiatives that need your help over the Christmas season.

  • Crisis at Christmas - Crisis is an organisation that helps those who are currently homeless by providing them accommodation and meals. They are located all over the UK and not all roles require qualifications.

  • Nottingham Community Volunteering Service - This is a local initiative who are providing a Christmas meal on the 22nd December and need volunteers to help in the kitchen and preparing the hall. They have also made clear that not all roles require a DBS check and that your travel expenses will be covered.

Support

Christmas can be lonely and it is important to remember that it is fine to feel that way. However, if you would like to spend the day with others you can.

  • Crisis at Christmas - They provide help throughout the year for those who are currently or at risk of homelessness. Over the Christmas period their centres provide a hot-meal, support and companionship from the dates 24th December to the 28th December.

  • The Salvation Army - A Christian organization that provides for those in need throughout the year and at Christmas. They are hosting Christmas dinners and other festive events throughout the season. Click on the link to find your local centre.

  • Places of welcome - Set up by local communities to ensure that those who are in need can find a warm space and someone to speak with. Click on the link to find your local place of welcome.

Finances

It is hard enough trying to balance your finances let alone during the Christmas period. There are lots of organisations that may be able to help you during this time.

  • Citizens Advice bureau - can give advice and signpost you to local support schemes that may be able to help. Please click the link to find your local one.

  • The Salvation Army - They have a present appeal every year where they provide presents for children and young people.
